Mapping Landscape Values MLV (Prototype Project)
What is MLV?
MLV is an art-based service for landowners and managers. It offers a new approach to gathering data on how people perceive and value different landscapes as well as how people (for example, from urban or rural backgrounds) value landscapes differently. It is designed to complement and support nature recovery through the new environmental land management plans.
Why MLV, What is the opportunity?
In order to apply successfully for the new environmental land management funding schemes such as the current Farming in Protected Landscapes programme (FiPL), and the forthcoming Environmental Land Management Schemes (ELMS), including Landscape Recovery (LR), and Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS), applicants will need to show how people value a landscape and the changes made to it. Using MLV can provide data about how people value the changes made by the projects that are funded.
For instance the FiPL programme requires the following evidenced outcomes, which MLV can help to provide:
- There are more opportunities for people to explore, enjoy and understand the landscape;
- There are more opportunities for more diverse audiences to explore, enjoy and understand the landscape;
- There is greater public engagement in land management, such as through volunteering;
- Farmers and land managers feel increasingly comfortable with providing public goods.
